Monthly Bulletin /Circular AUGUST, 2022 /037

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord:

Grace and Peace of Christ be with you.

1. The Month of August: I warmly welcome you to the month of August. This month is characterized by pilgrimages, travels and vacations. As we make out time to relax and refresh, let us remember to commit to the Lord our thoughts, works and plans and be assured that He will grant us success.

The Liturgy of the Church for this month presents us with the opportunity to reflect specially on the lives and virtues of the Blessed Virgin whose Assumption and Queenship we celebrate this month.

Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary: August 15, is the Solemnity of the Assumption. It is a Holy Day of obligation. Catholics are obliged to attend Mass on this day. This Solemnity is a celebration of one of the four Marian dogmas, which teaches that the Blessed Mother Mary, having been preserved from the stain of original sin and after completing her earthly life, was by the power of God assumed into heaven, body and soul. This dogma was declared by the Apostolic Constitution of Pope Pius XII in the year 1950. Let us, like Mary strive for holiness of life.

On this day, may I request that Pastors offer special prayers for the world, our country Nigeria and the Diocese, imploring the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

We are invited also to reflect on the beatific vision in the Transfiguration of Jesus (August 6) and on the lives the following Saints whose feasts occur in this month: St. Alphonsus Liguori (1st August), St. John Mary Vianney, Patron of Parish Priests (4th August); St. Dominic (8th August), St. Lawrence (10th August); St. Clare (11th August); St. Maximillian Kolbe (14th August); St. Bernard (20th August); Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary (22nd August), St. Bartholomew (24th August); St. Monica (27th August) and St. Augustine (28th August). May the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for us all. Amen..

2. Popes Intention for the month of August: For Small Businesses: Let us pray for small businesses; in the midst of economic and social crisis, that they may find ways to continue operating and serving their communities.

3. Bishops Intention for the month of August: For increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life: That we may experience an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life among the youth of the Diocese.
